Happy New Year! On the Persian Calendar, today is Nowruz, or Persian New Year. The moment the sun crosses the celestial equator and equalizes night and day it is officially a "New Day" which is the literal translation to Nowruz. On this day every year families get together to celebrate and observe the rituals of the holiday. Starting fresh for the "rebirth of nature" is called Khouneh Tekouni, which includes a major spring-cleaning of the house, purchasing new clothes to wear in the new year, and the buying of flowers. Popular flowers include the hyacinth and the tulip. For 12 days family members dress in their new clothes and visit one another starting with the elders and ending with their friends. On the thirteenth day families leave their homes for the Sizdah Be-dar ceremony and picnic outside.

Since it is believed that whatever you do on the first day of Nowruz will affect the rest of the year, you'd better ring it in right. So we have some local festivities to make sure you have a festive 1394.
