Just in case you didn't hear all of the hype, history was made on Saturday night when our neighbors at UC Irvine won over Hawaii in the Big West Tournament Final. This win earned them the automatic bid to secure a spot in the NCAA basketball tournament for the first time since moving to the Division I level in 1978. Students couldn't help but showing a little glee when rushing the Honda Center floor after the game, expressing their excitement until after midnight.
LA Time writes that sophomore guard, Luke Nelson, wanted to be a part of this moment since childhood in England where he would watch every game. While Irvine wasn't likely to be a drop in the bucket, Nelson went there with making the NCAA tournament as his goal. Scoring 17 points Saturday night helped get his team there.
