Safety is the paramount concern for anyone who is the market for a new vehicle. Luckily, this isn't just something that consumers and we at Fletcher Jones Motorcars know, but rather something that is apparent to the engineers at Mercedes-Benz. And, to this end, the innovative gurus are hard at work continuing to develop the latest safety technology for models in the new Mercedes-Benz lineup.
And, now, Mercedes-Benz has teamed up with Continental to develop a brand-new pedestrian detection system that's set to debut as part of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The system, which utilizes both a stereo camera and radar, offers both quality and quantity to its drivers. Meaning, that the two separate facets have different responsibilities; the camera offering precise detection at a closer range of about 105 feet; and the radar detecting it much earlier at distances of up to 656 feet.
Additionally, the great thing about the pedestrian detection system is its automatic response mechanisms. By equipping the device with EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), it is able to bring the vehicle to a complete stop, at speeds of up to 44 miles per hour, if it senses a collision. If the system deems a stop possible, it also kicks on its ESA (Emergency Steer Assist) which maneuvers the vehicle to where it should go.
After the pedestrian detection system is unveiled in the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, it remains to be seen which new Mercedes-Benz models will feature it from that point on. Fletcher Jones Motorcars, however, can't wait to find out.
